What is the TOEFL iBT Test?
Basic Overview
The American company, Educational Testing Service (ETS), developed the new TOEFL iBT test in order to properly gauge a non-native, English speaking student's ability to function in a North American university setting. The test is comprised of four individual sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section is designed to measure the test taker's ability to understand and use English in its spoken and written forms in a university setting. The entire test is taken in one sitting with one ten minute break. The test takes about four hours.
What To Expect
* The test will be adminstered in a secure testing center. The testing center will have one or two certified testing administrators who will monitor the test takers. Test monitors will check your identification to make sure you are who you say you are. The monitors will give brief instructions and assist in handing out items such as pencils and paper. At no time will the test administrators be able to assist the test taker with questions on the test.
* Test takers are allowed to take notes during the test. At the end of the test, the test administrators will collect and destroy all notes taken by students. Students who are caught trying to smuggle their notes out of the testing center may face harsh penalties, including possible forfeiture of their test score. Such measures are in place in order to ensure that students do not pass test questions on to potential test takers.
* Cellular phones, mp3 players, PMPs, radios, calculators, electronic dictionaries, and other electronic devices should be left at home or turned off and placed in your bag. If a test taker is found to be using an electronic device during the test, he or she could be expelled from the test center. These rules are strictly enforced and taken seriously throughout all ETS test facilities, both in North America and abroad.
* You should use the bathroom BEFORE you enter the testing center. Once the test begins, you will not be able to leave the test room until your ten minute break. You may not receive your ten minute break for up to two hours or more.
* At the beginning of each section you will be presented with the general instructions for that section. All the information needed to complete the test is presented on the individual computer of each test taker. There are no test booklets or written instructions on paper for the test taker to read.
* The speaking section requires you to speak into a microphone. Your answer will be recorded on the computer and forwarded electronically to ETS headquarters where experts will score your answer.
* For the writing section, you will be required to type your answer using a standard computer keyboard. Your writing will be electronically transmitted to ETS headquarters where experts will evaluate your writing.
