I've recently been turned on to books published by Focal Press (a division of Elsevier). As a company, Focal Press has been very good to work with, and their selection of photography books is solid. This review will cover the Michelle Turner book "The Wedding Photography Field Guide". I'm still in the information gathering stages of this aspect of the photography world, but I can approach this review with a brief critical analysis. Photography is best learned by doing, and I know that I have much doing to do. Since time is a limiting factor, I need to review the fundamental concepts of this subject before venturing out into actually photographing weddings. I fully intend to assist an established wedding photographer, as there is much to learn by just watching what they do, and then eventually following their lead. A wedding is a serious event that cannot be replicated, and preparing for the nuances of what can occur is extremely important. The stress of having just one chance to do it right can be immense, but this field guide has a very thorough review of all the basics that go into photographing a wedding, and can help a determined photographer to better approach this medium.
I recently acquired several books on wedding photography to review before beginning the apprentice process, and this book has everything one will need to get started, at a very affordable price. This book is physically smaller than a regular text book, but is well organized into categories that are logical (gear, preparation, event day, post production), and provides quality information that is presented in a very approachable manner. The material is easy to follow, and can be absorbed by photographers of any level. There real examples of wedding shots, but they are presented in a very matter of fact way, and are not a tool for the author to just show off their work. The photos are extremely high quality, and are not excessive in number, allowing author to succeed in presenting the material and displaying the results. The print in this book is small, but it IS a field guide and not a large desk reference type of book. One could keep this book in their camera bag for a few events until they get a routine down, but even then, it would revert to an excellent bookshelf reference tool. This publication has a five star value, and will make an excellent addition to any photographers personal library.
It is clear that the author has an expertise with this type of photography, and knows how to convey information to a variety of readers. Well written books on photography can stand the test of time, and Focal Press has a very good collection of titles on this subject and many other subjects such as film/video, audio and music technology, and electronic resources. I had many different Elsevier books when taking classes on medicine and related subjects in the past, and found them all to be very high quality. The Wedding Photography Field Guide by Michelle Turner is yet another quality product from this publisher that will easily fit the budget of any photographer, and give back to the reader far after their initial purchase.
